Music inspired by Boys & Girls Club

Last night I went to the Boys & Girls Club Panty Party at Shadowbar sponsored by American Apparel. As one would expect, the party was full of well-dressed hipster types in their underwear and DJ DAYTA from Rockbox was spinning electro, hip-hop, and pop dance music with a touch of Baltimore club. There were live performances: one from Nasty Nation, a kind of electroclashy guy appropriately dressed in American Apparel briefs, the second from a burlesque troupe. In the past week, my sister taught herself to Spongebob so she was all up in the club showing off her new moves even getting a couple of compliments from passersby. For those of you not privy to the Spongebob dance craze i.e. those who don't live in Baltimore or Philadelphia, a brief survey of YouTube will do you good. Here are a couple of tracks from the set list so you guys can get an idea of how it went.

DJ Medhi - Lucky Girl/Stick It

So a couple of days ago I got an email from a friend of a friend who's a deejay in Washington, D.C. I had recently been lamenting the lack of dance parties at William & Mary, and as a graduate of the College a couple of years ago, my new deejay acquaintance echoed my concerns. She offered to come down any weekend and spin for free for love of the school and a good time. The reason why this is relevant is that her genre of choice is French electro/electro-house along with other stuff mixed in (if you really care: crunk, bmore club, baile funk). Coincidentally, I had just been working on my french electro collection by downloading tons of remixes and edits from artists like Uffie, DJ Medhi, SebastiAn and Justice among others. In honor of this exciting development and the possibility of amazing dance parties at William & Mary, I am obliged to share the wealth. Enjoy!

Live: Booka Shade, Scottie B & King Tutt, Star Eyes

This isn't really a live event seeing as it already happened when I was in New York on 15 March 2007, but it was a blast and I was anticipating writing about it when I saw some pics and YouTube video(s) of the show on the Brooklyn-based hipster blog, Dirty Down. The show itself was awesome. As you can see from the video: lights everywhere, bass thumping, crowd full of young people ready to get down to some excellent electronic music. It's just weird seeing pictures, because I kind of remember people from the crowd and could probably tell you specific things about people if it didn't border on creepy. Booka Shade is amazing, the whole concept of minimal-ish techno with live instrumentation really pushes their performance into the next stratosphere. Obviously I'm not the only one who thinks so because the place was packed and everyone knew the big songs by heart. All that excitement plus the Bmore club sounds of Scottie B + King Tutt, who I actually have a compilation of but didn't realize it until afterwards. Overall, an excellent show by XLR8R and Cut NYC. I would have really loved to be in New York for Ellen Allien and Miss Kitten (BPitchControl showcase), but alas I have obligations in Virginia. Although, according to Dirty Down it was quite the party as well. Check pics here. Also, if you don't have Booka Shade's Movements yet, you need to get on that shit.
