Being in Houston means I'm so much more interested in dirty south hip-hop than I ever am at school. The radio plays advance tracks and Sunday nights are chopped and screwed. My friends here like screw and hip-hop in general. The whole culture kind of encourages it. So I was sitting at home, browsing YouTube watching videos like Mike Jones' new "My '64" cut (you know, the one that uses an Eazy E sample as the chorus? The video is awesome too!) when I came across this S.U.C. video that samples the Bootsy Collin's song "I'd Rather Be With You" changing up the lyrics to"I'd Rather Bang My Screw". I thought that was a clever use of lyrics and recycled funk beats so I'm putting it up. 5CR3W5T0N 5T4ND UP!

Music inspired by Boys & Girls Club

Last night I went to the Boys & Girls Club Panty Party at Shadowbar sponsored by American Apparel. As one would expect, the party was full of well-dressed hipster types in their underwear and DJ DAYTA from Rockbox was spinning electro, hip-hop, and pop dance music with a touch of Baltimore club. There were live performances: one from Nasty Nation, a kind of electroclashy guy appropriately dressed in American Apparel briefs, the second from a burlesque troupe. In the past week, my sister taught herself to Spongebob so she was all up in the club showing off her new moves even getting a couple of compliments from passersby. For those of you not privy to the Spongebob dance craze i.e. those who don't live in Baltimore or Philadelphia, a brief survey of YouTube will do you good. Here are a couple of tracks from the set list so you guys can get an idea of how it went.

Live: Ratatat, 120 Days, Despot, The Dimes

This is kind of a shameless plug because I've known all the guys from the Dimes all throughout high school and seen them perform live in excess of 100 times, but it's nice to hear that they're finally getting some recognition down in Houston. Ratatat is a big name in the indie scene right now and they just keep pumping out the labyrinthy-synth-hip-pop hits. Despot is a rapper from Queens who was featured on the latest self-released Ratatat remix mixtape (Vol. II for those keeping count). 120 Days are a Swedish post-rock band that were getting a lot of hype around the time they played at CMJ in New York last fall, but I haven't heard much of them lately. Overall, a great outdoor show even in the Houston heat. If you're in the Houston metro area, you have to check this out! It's FREE!!

Devin the Dude - Lacville '79

Devin the Dude is consistently one of Houston's most underrated rappers. The Dude has been in the Houston rap game for awhile now (since his 1998 debut The Dude) and has enjoyed considerable underground success, especially in the Houston regional scene. His collaboration with Dr. Dre on the Chronic 2001 hit "Fuck you" brought some mainstream name recognition. Unlike some of Houston's more commercially appealing stars ala Slim Thug and Paul Wall (although I'm not quite sure why Paul Wall is really appealing), Devin's style is truly unique. His self-deprecation and subtle humor bring a fresh perspective to a hip-hop culture so obsessed with being serious or wealthy or whatever it is all these rappers are chasing.
