I am about to send off the video mixtape I've been working on for the past 3-4 days for a William & Mary mixtape exchange I joined a little while ago. Above is a peak at the final product. I made the tape by splicing YouTube videos together in iMovie. I could have opted for something more professional (i.e. Final Cut Pro) but I feel the cheesiness of iMovie almost makes it better. I don't feel that this would necessarily come as a surprise to anyone, but I am a huge fan of early house music and my appreciation for the genre is constantly growing. The Soul Jazz compilation "Acid: Can You Jack?" which focuses on the experimental side of acid house has been on heavy rotation in addition to a 15-CD Chicago House box set my roommate downloaded, which is really primo stuff. In the past two days, I've probably spent 8 or so hours that could have been better allocated to studying for finals or writing final papers messing around with Propellerhead's ReBirth (an old school emulator for the TB303, TR808, and TR909) making beats that sound like Phuture trax. In short, I'm kind of an acieed freak!
So I got to thinking, "What is the best way to introduce other to the wonders of acieed?" I came across the answer in the form of a mixtape I had downloaded awhile back from Dalston Oxfam Shop, a blog run by a record store in UK where they post a digital copy of a cassette tape mix each week. While admittedly, this tape is NOT acieed house in the purest sense(although "Acieed!" is the title of the mixtape), it is a really good mixtape of post-acid proto-deep house type stuff, and definitely takes a lot of influence from acieed's 303 squirms and simplistic 808 beats. Plus, you get the added bonus of lofi hum from the cassette tape conversion. Give it a listen!

I was on my friends' radio show (I Want My Kids Back) the other night which runs from 12-2am EST on our local college radio station, WCWM (Listen online!). Since the FCC doesn't regulate radio traffic for profanity after midnight, we decided to engage in an on air crunk rap fest that began by my bringing DJ Chuck T's Down South Slangin' Vol. 34 to the station and playing 3-4 key tracks. In my enthusiasm for purely electronic music in the past few months, I had forgotten how much I love crunk rap. I have been into southern rap for awhile, or at least since I found MixtapeTorrent and the Houston rap scene a couple of years ago (I'm a Houston native). For those of you who are not yet acquainted with the Down South Slangin' series, let me just tell you, these are some of the best rare crunk rap cuts you've ever heard. Awready.com, a fan site dedicated to the proliferation of southern rap, nominated the Down South Slangin series as the best mixtape series and DJ Chuck T as the best mixtape DJ of the year.
Best believe, the mixtape business is big business; bootlegging and illegal copying are huge in the hip-hop industry. Most of all, I feel as if the transition in hip-hop from focusing on lyrical content to beatmaking reflects an increased connection to electronic music. If you haven't been listening lately, you might have missed all the Kraftwerk and Cybotron samples showing up in popular hip-hop. The fact that we have hip-hop celebrities that are primarily producers indicates a change in attitudes toward the instrumental musical component of hip-hop. That's it for my rant, listen to mixtapes!
